National Safety Month - Overexertion

National Safety Month 2009

"Watch Your Back" this June during National Safety Month

The National Safety Council (http://www.nsc.org/nsm) is sponsoring the National Safety Month in June, 2009. Your involvement in National Safety Month can help reduce employee injuries on and off the job. Take advantage of materials each week that target some of our nation’s most pressing safety risks.

Teen Driving (June 1 through 7)

Traffic crashes are the number-one cause of teen fatalities -- an estimated 38 percent of all teen deaths occur from crashes. Inexperience, speeding, cell phone use/texting and alcohol are some of the leading factors that can heighten young drivers’ risks. As parents, your employees can take steps to help keep young drivers safe. For more information visit the teen driving National Safety Month page.

Fall Prevention (June 8 through 14)

Falls are a leading cause of workplace injuries and a significant at-home risk, especially concerning Americans age 65+. Most falls can be prevented by taking relatively easy steps, like ensuring good lighting and sturdy surfaces, wiping up spills and using proper footwear. Learn more about fall prevention.

Overexertion (June 15 through 21)

Back injuries, a form of overexertion, are the nation’s leading workplace safety problem and the third-leading reason for emergency room visits for non-fatal unintentional injuries. There are proven ways to prevent most overexertion injuries, such as using proper lifting techniques and engaging in back-strengthening exercises. Read more about overexertion.

Distracted Driving (June 21 through 28)

When driving, your first responsibility is the safety of those in your vehicle and others on the road. Cell phone use while driving and other forms of distracted driving account for 80 percent of all crashes. Please note that a law has been passed in Charlotte that will go into effect on January 1st, 2010 that makes sending text messages while driving unlawful in the state of North Carolina. Prepare for this by putting away the cell phone while driving.
